12:53 pm - vacation so far
Plane trip was less eventful than expected - Andrew didn't cry at all on the plane, and even laughed during the takeoff. Daryl met us at the airport, from whence we went back to his place and caught a few ZZZs (Andrew was more upset after we got off the plane, so we didn't get that much sleep).
Headed for dinner at an East Side Marios that turned out to be non-existent (a story involving similarly named streets), then settled on a place called Pickle Barrel. Definitely good, got to catch up with a bunch of people I miss :) Though there was one who couldn't make it (I hope we can catch up later this week when we're in Waterloo...)
Our Saturday plans fell through, so we ended up going to a Kraft / Peak Freans cookie factory (holy crap cheap cookies - we bought 8 packages for around $7 - packages the size you'd normally see at a grocery store), then shopping at Yorkdale for a while (we at least needed to pick up some winter gear for Andrew), and went for dinner at Jack Astors.
I'm beginning to miss our cloth diapers because ( cut for the squeamish and/or those who don't want to know the details )
Today, we're headed out to Waterloo today and will be spending some time at Cass & Tim's place (and Andrew will have another baby to play with!)

07:43 am - Politics
I've seen comments saying how this coalition is "undemocratic" or "not what Canadians voted for", and even "the people rejected Dion as their leader" - coming from people like Harper himself and even some of my friends. No matter how I look at this, I can't see it that way:
The Canadian system is NOT the American system - people don't vote directly for a leader, they vote for their MP representative. The person who ends up as the "leader" is essentially chosen by the MPs.
Stephen Harper is currently the "leader" because he has a group of MPs that chose him (yes this is simplified a bit), and that group was larger than other individual groups - but NOT larger than the combination of those other groups. The coalition is basically a larger group of MPs that agree on who the leader should be.
Another way to look at it - you decided to vote based on who you wanted to be in charge. 37.6% of Canadian voters picked Harper, but the other 62.4% voted for "not Harper". How is actually getting "not Harper" undemocratic?
There's probably better ways I could argue this, but trying to do it with a fussy baby distraction is difficult...

09:44 pm - logging onto facebook installs virus?
Looks like somebody is exploiting a vulerability facebook says doesn't exist:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/0
So we got bit by a "virus" today - from what I can tell, it installs while you are using facebook - not necessarily visiting anything "fishy", just some people's profiles and your home page.
At least it was simple to clean up - just a file search for new files and references to them in the registry. (some were timestamped 1:50 AM Sept 15 - likely when this app was added to facebook, some were timestamped later tonight, when we actually logged onto facebook. The Facebook cookie had the same timestamp as some of the virus files)
Some files:
C:\x
C:\empa.exe - self extracting exe with numbered exes and images.
Installs two programs "PCHealthCenter" and "MicroAV", puts some stuff in system32 directory.

09:01 pm - PS3 doing better than XBOX360, as well as PS2
http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?co
PS3's not doing as bad as a lot of popular media has it doing - this chart shows console sales from launch date for PS2, PS3, and XBOX 360 - the idea is to show "how fast" it takes each console to get to a certain sales level.
PS3 has been doing as well as the XBOX 360, and since the recent news that Blu Ray is winning the format war, has now caught up to PS2 levels.
(Note that you can modify the chart to show Wii, which of course, is clearly doing better than all of those (about double the sales per week of the previous bestseller, PS2.)

A bridge collapsed in Minneapolis a few hours ago...
http://news.sympatico.msn.ctv.ca/TopSto
The collapse happened shortly after 6 p.m. local time, sending a massive cloud of dust into the sky and terrifying onlookers during the height of rush hour.
"There were two lanes of traffic, bumper to bumper, at the point of the collapse. Those cars did go into the river,'' said Minneapolis Police Lt. Amelia Huffman.

10:42 am - The thrill is in the chase
I don't update this thing very often, and I think that trend will continue.
Basically, I've come to the realization that I'm an 'internet wallflower' - I like to read things and sometimes put in my two cents, but generally not start my own threads. I feel it's because I often have other things I'd rather be doing than telling people about the mundane details of my life... at least, that's what I tell myself.
When I was younger, I'd started a website on geocities during one summer - it was supposed to be this grand thing that I'd update all the time so there would be something new every day - to keep people interested of course. It ended up becoming quite a mess & difficult to update, then school started up again and it became completely forgotten.
I initially started this site remembering what happened last time - this time, I'd make it easy to update by using some scripting language. I thought it would be fun to see if I could do it - I used stuff I learned in University about security and sql, and taught myself php. Of course, I had plenty of spare time to do it in - I'd just moved out to Vancouver where I knew nobody, and was often home early to phone Jenn (3-hour time difference).
Then it was finished, and suddenly I had "better things" to do than post to some website - more work, wedding planning, friends, video games...who cares about some silly website.
Just like a dog chasing a car - it's great fun to go after something, but once you catch it, it's often less interesting. I think that's like me and my own websites.

08:44 am - who's a hippie?
| Neopagan You are 36% experimental, 59% feral, 63% spiritual, and 30% square! |
Congratulations! You're a Neopagan. Well, maybe you're not precisely a pagan, but you have a deep love for primitive nature, and a strong sense of the spiritual. You feel the beauty of the wild around you and feel choked in the city. The hippie world needs you, because you bring together the beauty of the wild and the magic of the heart. If you believe that opposites attract, you probably find yourself around Ravers. If you are more inclined to enjoy the company of those with similar attitudes, then other Neopagans, as well as the Faerie-child, Treehugger, and Full-blown Hippie are for you. The other categories are Alternate/a>, Mystic, Feral and of course, the Non-hippie |

06:25 pm - settling down
Phew, finally a chance to sit down after having 8 plane trips in the last month and a half (wedding, honeymoon, recruiting trip, second reception). I will have some of the pictures from the wedding (and maybe us at Disney) sometime in the near future.
Apparently I'm also 26 now, making my first year at university 7 years ago now...I am married, have a house, a mortgage, and a kitten (who is eyeing up my tea and honey)...it's weird thinking about it, but I guess I'm technically a grown up now - *le sigh*.

10:20 pm - back from Disneyland
we got a slightly earlier flight back, and so I booted up the computer after checking our endless supply of phone messages (13 of which was a clinic calling for someone named "Kathy") and stack of mail.
Woot for being home! I actually have to set an alarm again for work tomorrow though...arrrrr!
